Venetian Customs House of Lazise

Lazise

From Scaligero arsenal to customs house of the Serenissima: six centuries of Garda trade history in a building on the harbour of Lazise.

A Medieval Arsenal Transformed into a Customs Office

Overlooking the small harbor of Lazise, the Venetian Customs House is a building with a unique history: built in the 14th century as a military arsenal for the Scaliger fleet, it was transformed in 1405 by the Republic of Venice into a customs office for controlling goods in transit on the lake. For nearly four centuries, every shipment of timber, grain, oil, and textiles crossing Lake Garda had to be registered here and subject to taxation by the Serenissima.

Architecture and Original Function

The building, with its austere façade in local stone and large arcades that once opened directly onto the water, preserves intact the character of its original purpose. The main hall—a single rectangular space with exposed wooden trusses and terracotta flooring—could accommodate goods unloaded from boats and host weighing and registration operations.

Lazise’s Strategic Importance in Regional Trade

Lazise’s position in the Lake Garda commercial network was no accident: the town was the first free municipality in Italy, having obtained from Emperor Otto II in 983 the right to self-govern, collect taxes, and maintain its own fleet. This tradition of commercial autonomy made Lazise a natural partner for Venice, which respected its prerogatives in exchange for loyalty and control over the eastern shore of the lake.

Today’s Venetian Customs House

Today the Venetian Customs House is one of the most sought-after event venues on Lake Garda. Its walls host civil weddings, art exhibitions, concerts, and cultural festivals, with the evocative atmosphere of a historic setting just meters from the water. In summer, the facing harbor comes alive with boats and outdoor tables, creating an atmosphere that blends past and present. The Customs House is freely accessible when not hosting private events. It can be reached from Lazise’s historic center through the gate in the medieval walls, a short distance from the main square. It is worth a visit to admire the architecture and landscape, combining the visit with the adjacent Scaliger Castle and a walk along the walls.
