Ruins with breathtaking lake views

Castel Penede rises on a promontory towering above Torbole, dominating the northern tip of Lake Garda. The ruins of this 13th-century medieval castle, once owned by the Counts of Castelbarco and later by the Republic of Venice, offer one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire lake.

History and charm of the ruins

The castle was destroyed by French troops in 1703 during the War of the Spanish Succession and was never rebuilt. The ruins — perimeter walls, the base of the tower and remains of the chapel — today blend with the Mediterranean vegetation in a romantic, evocative atmosphere. The name “Penede” derives from the Latin pendere, referring to its cliffside position.

How to get there

Reachable via a roughly 30-minute walk from Nago along a well-marked trail. The walk is suitable for everyone, and the panorama from the top amply rewards the effort: it takes in the entire upper Garda, from Riva to Malcesine, framed by the mountains.
