A Castle in the Heart of Valtenesi
Polpenazze del Garda Castle stands in the heart of Valtenesi, the gentle hilly area between Salò and Desenzano renowned for wine and oil production. The origins of the fortification date back to the 10th century, when it served as a refuge against Hungarian raids.
The Fortified Village
The medieval perimeter walls, rebuilt in the 15th century by the Venetian Republic, today encompass the historic center of the town: the town hall, the library, the parish church with its medieval tower-bell tower and some private residences. A walk along the walls offers panoramic views of the moraine hills and, on clear days, of Lake Garda.
Wine and Territory
Polpenazze is at the center of the production area for Groppello, an indigenous vine of Valtenesi that produces elegant red wines and the famous Chiaretto. Do not miss a visit to the local wineries and a walk among the centuries-old olive groves.
