The Mill Village on the Mincio
Borghetto sul Mincio is one of the most enchanting corners of the Veneto, an ancient village of water mills nestled on the banks of the Mincio River, at the foot of the majestic Visconti Bridge. Listed among Italy’s most beautiful villages, Borghetto is a place where time seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages.
What to See
The wheels of restored mills still turn in the clear waters of the Mincio, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Cobblestone alleyways wind between stone houses with flowering balconies, small pedestrian bridges, and picturesque corners. Above the village stands the Visconti Bridge (1393), a fortified dam-bridge 650 meters long commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, one of the most impressive medieval structures in northern Italy.
Gastronomic Traditions
Borghetto is famous for the tortellini of Valeggio (love knots), celebrated every third Tuesday of June with the Festival of the Love Knot, a communal table of 4,000 place settings along the bridge. The village’s restaurants serve this specialty year-round, accompanied by wines from the Mincio region.
