Mantova
LombardiaMantua is a Renaissance jewel surrounded by three lakes formed by the Mincio River, a UNESCO heritage site since 2008. The city of the Gonzagas holds extraordinary artistic treasures, from the Ducal Palace with Mantegna’s Bridal Chamber to Palazzo Te with rooms frescoed by Giulio Romano.
The historic center unfolds between monumental squares connected by arcades and medieval alleys. Piazza delle Erbe, with the Rotonda di San Lorenzo and the Clock Tower, and Piazza Sordello, dominated by the Duomo and the Ducal Palace, are the heart of the city. The Basilica of Sant’Andrea, a masterpiece by Leon Battista Alberti, holds the relic of the Precious Blood.
South of Lake Garda, Mantua can be reached from Peschiera by following the course of the Mincio River via the splendid Peschiera-Mantova bicycle path. Mantuan cuisine, with its pumpkin tortelli, risotto alla pilota, and sbrisolona, is among the finest in the Po Valley tradition.
