Moniga del Garda
Lombardia
The castle, dating back to the 10th century, is an exception in the Garda landscape: it was never a noble residence, but a collective enclosure where the entire community took refuge during raids. The walls, over 300 meters long, enclose an area of 12,000 square meters with inhabited houses, alleys and a bell tower. Entering through the main gate is like crossing a time threshold: inside you breathe a different air of stone, silence and filtered light.
Moniga’s harbor, collected and protected by a stone pier, is one of the most characteristic on the Brescian shore. Fishermen’s boats-now few in number-share space with pleasure craft, and restaurants on the marina serve lake fish with a view of the water. The public beach, wide and shallow, is among the most family-friendly on the Riviera.
Moniga’s Chiaretto comes from the Groppello grape variety, indigenous to the Valtenesi area, vinified with short maceration of the skins-a technique that produces a rosé wine with a soft color, almost an antique pink, with aromas of small red fruits and a minerality that reflects the morainic soil. Several wineries in the area offer tours and tastings.
The Moniga area is crisscrossed by paths that connect the lake to the hills behind it, passing through olive groves-the Garda Bresciano DOP olive oil is another local excellence-and vineyards. The Sentiero delle Grotte, which explores some natural cavities in the moraine hills, is a walk suitable for everyone.
Moniga can be reached from the western Gardesana (exit between Desenzano and Salò). Parking is available both in the upper center and in the harbor area.
