The Anello dei Castelli della Valtenesi (Ring of the Valtenesi Castles) is a half-day trek that connects the medieval castles on the Brescia side of Lake Garda in an 18-km ring-route. A journey through history among fortresses, walled villages and hills where Chiaretto wine and Garda DOP olive oil are produced.
The route
It starts from Moniga del Garda and its 10th-century fortress-castle – a fortress where the entire village found refuge during invasions. The trail links the medieval fortifications of the Valtenesi area, crossing hills covered with vineyards and olive groves.
The castles touched upon are those of Moniga, Padenghe, San Felice del Benaco and Puegnago – each with its own history and architecture. Between one castle and another, the landscape is typical Valtenesi: morainic hills, Chiaretto vineyards, olive groves and glimpses of the lake.
The castles
Each castle has its own uniqueness: Moniga is a castle-recinto where the population took refuge, Padenghe preserves its crenellated tower with a panoramic view, San Felice has a spectacular position above the lake. Together they tell a thousand years of defensive history of the Brescia Riviera.
Practical advice
Long route (18 km) but without technical difficulties. The difference in height of 380 metres is distributed in gentle ups and downs. Light hiking shoes, water and snacks. Plan stops in villages for visits and tastings. The best period is spring and autumn. The route can be divided into two half-loops for those who prefer a shorter version.
