A short hike but rich in history and views: the Rocca di Manerba is one of the most evocative spots on the Brescian shore of Lake Garda, where nature, archaeology and landscape come together in a circular route suitable for everyone.
The walk starts from the car park at the foot of the Rocca and climbs through the Archaeological Nature Park to the top of the promontory, where a fortress dating back to 110 AD once stood. According to local tradition, a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva – hence the name of the village – stood on the cliff. The fortress was later used by the Lombards and finally destroyed by the Venetians in 1575.
The panorama
From the top of the Rocca, 188 metres above sea level, the panorama is among the most beautiful of the lower lake: it sweeps from the Isola del Garda to the morainic hills of the Valtenesi, to the Monte Baldo chain and the Brescian Pre-Alps. On clear days, the view reaches as far as Sirmione and the Veronese shore.
The route
The loop trail winds its way through olive trees, Mediterranean scrub and rocky outcrops. Along the way there are information panels telling of the site’s thousand-year history and the archaeological findings of Riparo Valtenesi, a settlement dating back to the 5th century BC. The descent leads gently back to the starting point, with ever-changing views of the lake.
