Rocca di Lonato

Lonato del Garda

Visconti, Venetians and Habsburgs fought over this hilltop for centuries: the Rocca di Lonato commands the Garda hinterland from on high.

History and Strategic Importance

The Rocca di Lonato del Garda dominates the inland landscape of Lake Garda from a hilltop that rises 190 meters above the lake below. Its position—at the crossroads between the Brescia plain, the moraine hills, and the southern shore of Garda—made it for centuries a military outpost of strategic importance contested among the major powers of northern Italy.

The origins of the Rocca date back to the 10th century, but its present structure is the result of centuries of development. The Visconti of Milan enlarged it in the 14th century, transforming it into a citadel with a double wall, corner towers, and a central keep. The Venetians, who conquered it in 1441, reinforced its defenses with bastions designed to withstand artillery. During the 17th century, the Rocca was the scene of clashes between Venice and the Austrian Habsburgs, suffering sieges and destruction from which it was progressively rebuilt.

What to See Today

Today the Rocca hosts temporary exhibitions and a visiting route that crosses the various levels of the fortification: from the underground casemates, where ammunition was stored, to the patrol walks, from which the view spans in every direction. The main tower, restored, reaches a height of 25 meters and on clear days allows you to see the plain as far as Brescia and Mantova.

The Ugo Da Como Foundation and Park

The complex is closely linked to the Ugo Da Como Foundation, which is headquartered in the adjacent Podestà House: the two sites can be visited with a single ticket and together provide an experience combining military history, book collecting, and art in an outstanding landscape setting.

The Rocca park, with its lawns and tree-lined avenues, is a place frequented by families for walks and picnics with a view of the lake. In summer the Rocca hosts cultural events, performances, and historical reenactments.

Practical Information

A visit to the Rocca lasts approximately 30 minutes (90 minutes if combined with the Da Como Foundation). It can be reached from the center of Lonato with a 15-minute walk uphill, or by car to the upper parking lot.
