Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine
San Felice del Benaco
Gothic frescoes and views over the Gulf of Gargnano: the Carmelite sanctuary on the hillside, reachable on foot through the olive groves.
Location and Panoramic Setting
Halfway up the slope between Gargnano and its mountainous hinterland, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine stands in a position that seems designed to reward the pilgrim: after climbing through olive groves and holm oak forests, the church courtyard opens onto a view that dominates the entire Gulf of Gargnano and the Lombard shore of Lake Garda.
History and Founding
The sanctuary was founded in 1452 by friars of the Carmelite Order, who built the church and convent on a natural terrace at 293 meters above sea level. Tradition holds that the location was indicated by a Marian apparition, but the choice also responded to practical logic: the elevated position protected against the miasmic fevers that rose from the swampy areas of the shore in summer, and the open view guaranteed the safety of the settlement.
Artistic Treasures
The church preserves a remarkable cycle of late-Gothic frescoes, executed between 1452 and 1482 by anonymous masters from Brescia and Verona. The scenes, which decorate the side walls and the inner façade, depict episodes from the life of the Virgin and Christ with a narrative vividness and chromatic freshness that impress with their state of preservation. The high altar houses a wooden statue of the Madonna del Carmine from the 15th century, venerated by the Gargnano community.
Convent and Access Information
The convent cloister, with its arches in local stone and central well, exemplifies late-medieval conventual architecture in its most essential form. The friars have maintained a garden of medicinal plants—lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme—that perfumes the entire complex. The sanctuary can be reached on foot from Gargnano in approximately 40 minutes along a marked panoramic trail. For those preferring to drive, an asphalt road leads to a parking area 200 meters from the entrance. Admission is free. It is recommended to visit in the late afternoon, when the sunset light illuminates the lake’s colors and transforms the courtyard into a golden balcony.
