Tignale
Tignale is a small town on the Brescian shore of Lake Garda, perched on a natural terrace over 500 meters above sea level in the heart of the Alto Garda Bresciano Park. Far from the Riviera mundanity, it retains the charm of an authentic Garda: stone villages, historic lemon houses, centuries-old olive groves, and one of the most striking sanctuaries on the entire lake.
The municipality consists of several hamlets–Gardola (the administrative capital), Oldesio, Aer, Olzano, and Prabione–spread across the plateau, each with its own square, church, and rural identity. From the port on the lake, one ascends to the plateau along the ancient path 260, a medieval route that crosses terraces of monumental olive trees with plants over five hundred years old.
What to see
Tignale’s most famous monument is the Sanctuary of Montecastello, a small 14th-century church clinging to a rocky outcrop 700 meters above sea level, with one of the most aerial and photographed views of the entire Lake Garda area. Inside it holds 14th-century frescoes and a famous ex-voto attributed to Andrea Bertanza. Just beyond, on Mount Cas, an armored military observatory from World War I reminds us that these heights were garrisoned in strategic function.
Along the lake is the Pra’ dela Fam Lemon House, one of the best-preserved historic lemon houses in the Upper Garda Bresciano area, still functioning and open to visitors. Its stone structures with columns and wooden beams tell the story of centuries of citrus production that made this area of Garda famous until the early 20th century.
The medieval villages of Gardola and Oldesio preserve narrow alleys, stone houses, small churches, and the unspoiled atmosphere of an inland Garda rarely recounted. The Alto Garda Bresciano Park Museum in Prabione is the best introduction to the flora, fauna and history of the area.
What to do
Tignale is one of the most beautiful access points to the Alto Garda Bresciano Park. The classic hike is to the Sanctuary of Montecastello along the Bassa Via del Garda; for experienced walkers, the trail “In the Footsteps of the Bandit Zanzanù” retraces the places where the most feared bandit of seventeenth-century Garda was killed in 1617. Historic Trail 260 from the port to Gardola crosses the Bio Oliveto Didattico, with monumental olive trees.
How to Get There
Tignale can be reached from the Gardesana Occidentale (SS45 bis), diverting from the port of Tignale to the plateau along a scenic road overlooking the lake. Alternatively, the plateau can be reached from Val di Ledro via the pass. The port is also served by scheduled boats of Navigazione Lago di Garda. Parking available in Gardola, Prabione, and at the sanctuary.
When to go
Tignale can be visited year-round. Spring and autumn offer the clearest views and ideal temperatures for hiking. In winter the sanctuary of Montecastello, in low fog over the lake, offers a unique sight: the plateau suspended above the clouds. In summer, the altitude mitigates the lake’s heat.
