Villa Canossa

Garda

Weather now Loading...

Villa Canossa, also known as Villa Carlotti, is one of the most charming historic residences on Lake Garda, overlooking the water along the stretch of coast between Garda and Punta San Vigilio. Dating back to the 16th century, it was enlarged and transformed between the 18th and 19th centuries by the Carlotti family, who gave it its present sumptuous appearance, before it became linked to the name of the Counts of Canossa. The English-style park slopes down towards the lake with terraces and flower beds, among cypresses and glimpses of the water.

History and curiosities

The villa is connected to the figure of Alessandra di Rudinì, who lived here an intense relationship with the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, between private meetings and stays by the lake. Even today Villa Canossa is considered one of the most beautiful villas on Lake Garda, a symbol of the aristocratic elegance that marked the lake’s shores between the 19th and 20th centuries.

How to admire it

Villa Canossa is a private property and cannot be visited inside. The best way to admire it is from the lake, during a boat trip along the coast between Garda and San Vigilio, or from the beach below, which opens up a view of the façade and the park framed by the Rocca di Garda.

Tips for your visit

  • The most striking view is from the water: consider a boat tour or renting a small boat.
  • Respect the private nature of the property: it is admired from the outside, from the lake or the beach.
  • The morning and sunset light offer the best shots.
