Punta San Vigilio
Garda
Romantic promontory with a Renaissance villa and a private bay.
Punta San Vigilio is considered one of the most romantic and enchanting spots on the whole of Lake Garda. The promontory, jutting into the lake between Garda and Torri del Benaco, is home to a Renaissance villa, a small harbour, the ancient little church of San Vigilio, a historic inn and the famous Baia delle Sirene (Bay of the Mermaids), set in a park of cypresses and olive trees. Here time seems to stand still, amid silence, Mediterranean scents and picture-postcard views.
The villa and Sanmicheli’s design
At the heart of the promontory stands Villa Guarienti di Brenzone, built around 1540 by the humanist nobleman Agostino Brenzoni to a design by the Veronese architect Michele Sanmicheli. The villa is reached along an evocative avenue of centuries-old cypresses that descends gently towards the lake. The complex includes Italian-style gardens, statues, fountains and a tower, still privately owned today and framed by a landscape of rare harmony.
The inn and its illustrious guests
The historic Locanda San Vigilio, overlooking the tiny harbour, has always been one of the lake’s most exclusive and discreet retreats. Throughout the 20th century it welcomed crowned heads, film stars and famous figures: from Winston Churchill — who loved to paint here — to Maria Callas, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, as well as royals and heads of state seeking peace and privacy.
The Baia delle Sirene
At the foot of the promontory lies the Baia delle Sirene, one of Garda’s most charming beach-parks (paid entry): green lawns shaded by olives and cypresses sloping down to clear, sheltered waters. It is the ideal place for a relaxing day, with picnic areas, children’s play areas and the chance to swim in one of the most beautiful coves on the Verona shore.
The little church and the harbour
The small church of San Vigilio, which gives the point its name, stands beside the harbour together with a characteristic tavern. The little port, with its moored boats and open views over the lake, is one of the most photographed corners of Lake Garda, especially magical at sunset.
Tips for your visit
- The best times are dawn and above all sunset, when the light sets the promontory aglow.
- The Baia delle Sirene has paid entry and seasonal opening: check times and prices before you go.
- Parking is paid and fills up early in high season: arrive early, or reach the point on foot or by bike.
- The most evocative way to admire Punta San Vigilio is also from the lake, by boat.
