The Vittoriale of the Italians

Gardone Riviera

D'Annunzio's private citadel at Gardone Riviera: 9 hectares of gardens, a warship embedded in a hillside, and 10,000 objects of a poet-warrior.

A Monument to Excess

On a hillside in Gardone Riviera, among cypress trees and rose gardens, stands the most celebrated monument to excess at Lake Garda. The Vittoriale of the Italians is the citadel that Gabriele d’Annunzio designed and inhabited from 1921 until his death in 1938, transforming a modest German-style villa into a labyrinth of symbols, obsessions, and wonders.

The Prioria: A Journey into the Poet’s Mind

The Prioria—the house-museum—is a journey through the mind of the poet-soldier. Each room tells a story of an obsession: the Leper’s Room, where d’Annunzio retreated during periods of melancholy, is immersed in intentional semi-darkness, with windows screened by colored glass. The Music Room houses instruments and musical scores; the One-Armed Writer’s Study, named for its reduced dimensions, contains manuscripts of his latest works. In total, the Prioria houses over 10,000 objects including rare books, reliquaries, artworks, and curiosities collected over a lifetime.

The Park and War Museums

Within the 9-hectare park, visitors encounter the bow of the military ship Puglia—a torpedo boat from the Royal Italian Navy embedded into the hillside as if navigating toward the lake—and the SVA 10 aircraft with which the poet flew over Vienna in 1918, dropping tricolor leaflets. The MAS 96, the armed torpedo motorboat from the Buccari exploit, is preserved in the War Museum alongside relics, weapons, uniforms, and decorations.

Visiting Information

The Open-Air Theatre, inaugurated in 1953 with a capacity of 1,500 seats, overlooks the lake with a stage that uses the mountains as a natural backdrop. Each summer it hosts a season of concerts and performances featuring international-level artists. A complete visit requires at least 3 hours: the Prioria can only be visited with a guide (approximately 30 minutes), while the park, museums, and theatre are freely accessible. The Vittoriale is the most visited museum on the entire Lake Garda with over 250,000 visitors annually. It is recommended to purchase tickets online to avoid queues, especially during July and August. The nearest parking is the municipal car park in Gardone Riviera, a 5-minute walk from the entrance.
