Garda by boat: navigating the lake from north to south

Sailing boat on Lake Garda

Sailing the Garda: an unforgettable experience

Seeing Lake Garda from the water is a perspective-changing experience: villages seen from the boat, mountains reflected in the water, hidden bays reachable only from the lake. Whether you are an experienced sailor or an absolute beginner, Garda offers a thousand ways to experience the lake from its surface.

Sailing

Garda is the ultimate sailing lake in Europe, thanks to its consistent and predictable thermal winds. Sailing clubs offer courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced. The most renowned schools are in Riva del Garda, Torbole, Gargnano and Malcesine.

For those who want to sail without a license, sailboats under 6 meters do not require a license. Schools offer 3-5 day courses that take you from first board to independent sailing. Rental of small dinghies (Lasers, 420s) costs about 30-50€ per day.

By motor boat

For those who prefer motor, Garda offers motor boat rentals without a license (up to 40 hp and 10 meters). Prices range from 50€ to 200€ for half a day, depending on the boat. The main rental ports are Desenzano, Sirmione, Gardone, Salò, and Riva.

Motor boat trips allow you to reach beaches and coves inaccessible from land, explore the Brescian coastline with its caves and cliffs, and swim in crystal clear waters away from the crowds.

By boat: the tour of the lake

The Navigarda service offers scenic cruises that connect all the locations on the lake. The full Garda tour-from Desenzano to Riva and back-takes the entire day and offers a complete view of all shores. The boats are comfortable with on-board bars and outdoor decks to enjoy the view.

The most scenic routes are: Desenzano – Sirmione, Gardone – Gargnano, Limone – Riva. The Maderno – Torri car ferry crosses the lake at its narrowest point and is an experience in itself.

By kayak and canoe

For those who enjoy paddling, Garda offers ideal conditions for kayaking and canoeing. The most interesting coastlines are:

  • Sirmione peninsula: full tour with caves and hot springs
  • Gargnano coast: cliffs, caves and hidden beaches
  • Salo Bay: calm waters and panoramic views
  • Coast of Malcesine: under the castle and along the coves

Kayak rental costs about 15-25€/hour. Guided kayak tours are available at many locations.

In SUP

Stand-Up Paddle has become one of the most popular ways to explore the lake. The Sirmione SUP Tour is the most popular, but guided sessions are available at almost every location. Early morning, when the lake is flat and quiet, is the magic time for SUP.

Safety tips

  • Always check the weather forecast before going out – thunderstorms on Lake Garda can be sudden
  • Respect the areas reserved for bathers (200 m from the shore)
  • Life jacket mandatory for minors, recommended for all
  • Beware of theAfternoon Hour: wind can raise substantial waves in the northern part
  • In summer, the lake is very busy – caution and observance of precedence

Ports and mooring

Garda’s main ports offer daily and seasonal moorings. Desenzano, Salò, and Riva have the largest harbors. For transient boats, berths can also be found in Gargnano, Malcesine and Lazise. Book in advance in high season.
