Eating on Garda: a gastronomic guide
Lake Garda is a crossroads of culinary traditions: Trentino cuisine from the north, Brescian cuisine from the west, and Veronese cuisine from the east come together in a rich gastronomic panorama. Lake fish, DOP extra virgin olive oil, fine wines, and mountain products are the ingredients of a table that always surprises.
Haute cuisine
Garda is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants, concentrated mainly on the Brescia shore between Gardone Riviera, Gargnano and Salò. Lake cuisine here reaches international levels of excellence, with dishes that reinterpret Lake Garda tradition with contemporary technique. Reservations well in advance required.
The Veronese shore also boasts top restaurants, especially in the Malcesine area, where the cuisine celebrates lake fish and Monte Baldo products.
Traditional inns and taverns
The real heart of Garda gastronomy is in the trattorias and osterias where locals eat. Here’s where to look:
- Veronese shore: taverns in Torri del Benaco, Bardolino, and Garda serve the freshest lake fish and traditional Veronese dishes such as pearà, bigoli con le sarde, and bigoli with duck ragout
- Brescian shore: restaurants in Gargnano and Toscolano-Maderno offer lake fish in an authentic and discreet atmosphere
- Upper lake: in Riva del Garda and Arco, Trentino cuisine reigns with canederli, carne salada and strangolapreti
Inland farmhouses
Farmhouses in the Gardesan hills are the best value for money on the lake. They produce their own oil, wine, and vegetables, and offer hearty set menus at affordable prices. The best areas for agritourisms are the Valtenesi (Brescian shore), the hills behind Bardolino and Lazise, and the Trentino hinterland around Arco.
Restaurants with a view
Garda offers numerous restaurants with lakeside terraces where the view is an integral part of the experience. The most impressive are located along the Ponale Trail, on the lakefront in Gargnano, and on the panoramic terraces in Tremosine.
Pizza and street food
Every Garda village has its own pizzerias with wood-fired ovens, with quality pizzas for 7-12€. For street food, look for focaccerie and bakeries in the historic centers, and artisanal ice cream parlors with their own production-the Garda ice cream is a true institution.
Dishes you absolutely must try
- Bigoli con le sarde – fresh pasta with lake sardines, the queen of the Garda table
- Pike in green sauce – historic Garda dish, with parsley and capers
- Carne salada – Trentino specialty, beef marinated and served raw or cooked
- Tortellini di Valeggio – the famous “love knots” of Valeggio sul Mincio
- Artisanal ice cream – every village has its own historic ice cream shop
Tips for eating well while spending the right amount
Lunches are generally cheaper than dinners. Inland agritourisms offer the best value for money. Avoid the overly touristy restaurants directly on the lakefront of the most famous villages-often you only have to move one street away to find better quality at more honest prices. The daily lunch menu is always a good choice.
