The Ciclopista del Mincio is one of the most beautiful cycle paths in Italy: 43 km surrounded by nature connecting Lake Garda to Mantua following the course of the river Mincio. A completely flat, shady and traffic-free route, perfect for families and cyclists of all levels.
The route
It starts at the UNESCO fortress of Peschiera del Garda, where the Mincio leaves the lake and begins its journey towards the Po. The cycle path faithfully follows the river through an ever-changing landscape: from the tree-lined banks of the first kilometres it passes through the rice fields of the plains to the wetlands and reed beds that herald Mantua.
The first section passes through Borghetto sul Mincio – one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy – where medieval watermills and a Visconti bridge create a picture worthy of a postcard. Continuing southwards, the landscape becomes more open with cultivated fields and floodplain woods until reaching Valeggio sul Mincio, famous for its tortellini and the Parco Giardino Sigurtà.
Arrival in Mantua
The last kilometres offer the most exciting sight: Mantua emerging from the mists of its lakes, with the unmistakable profile of the Ducal Palace and the dome of Sant’Andrea. The city of the Gonzagas deserves at least half a day’s visit. It is possible to return to Peschiera by train (Mantua-Verona line with a stop in Peschiera), bringing your bicycle.
Practical advice
Completely flat route on asphalt and beaten dirt road. Shaded for much of the route. Fountains and refreshment points along the entire route. Suitable for children aged 6-7 years on their own bikes. E-bike ideal for those who want to make a round trip without a train. Bike hire in Peschiera. Open all year round, but spring and autumn days are the most pleasant. Dogs permitted on a leash.
