Hidden in the morainic hills on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda, the Hermitage of San Giorgio is one of those places capable of surprising even the most experienced visitors. Founded in 1663 by Camaldolese monks, this small convent clings to the slopes of the Rocca di Garda, surrounded by an ancient silence that the birdsong makes even more profound.
The path leading to the hermitage is a gentle stroll among olive trees, cypresses and Mediterranean scrub, with the lake gradually revealing itself among the vegetation. You start at the Garda cemetery and follow the signs towards the Rocca, passing the church of San Bernardo. The ascent is gradual and well maintained, with wooden steps that make the route accessible even in the wetter months.
Having reached the Rocca, continue for another fifteen minutes to the hermitage proper, where a small Mount Calvary with a cross and Via Crucis welcomes visitors in an atmosphere of meditation. The view of the Gulf of Garda from this position is extraordinary: the town of Garda lies at the foot of the Rocca and the water of the lake shimmers in the distance as far as the Sirmione peninsula.
A walk of about six kilometres round trip, perfect for half a day, combines the natural beauty of the Veronese Garda area with the fascination of religious and monastic history.
