Garda: a paradise for sailing sports
Lake Garda is recognized worldwide as one of the best spots for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. Credit is due to a unique thermal wind system: the Pelér from the north in the morning and theOra del Garda from the south in the afternoon guarantee ideal conditions from April to October, with a regularity that few places in the world can boast.
The Winds of Lake Garda
The Pelér (Wind)
It rises before dawn from the mountains of Trentino and blows from north to south until mid-morning. It is a steady, regular wind, perfect for windsurfing. The intensity ranges from 10 to 20 knots, with ideal conditions for all levels. Experienced surfers love it for sunrise sessions.
The Garda Hour
The afternoon thermal wind picks up around 1 to 2 p.m. and blows from south to north until late afternoon. It can reach 20-25 knots, creating more challenging and fun conditions. It is the wind of choice for kitesurfers and experienced sailors. The Ora also generates waves in the northern part of the lake, adding excitement to sessions.
The best commercials
Torbole – the capital of windsurfing
Torbole is the beating heart of Garda windsurfing. The main beach offers direct access to water with perfect conditions: flat near shore for beginners, rough offshore for experts. Dozens of schools, rentals, and specialized stores make Torbole a complete center for every need. World championships and world cups are also held here.
Campione del Garda – the temple of kiting
The small bay of Campione, in the town of Tremosine, is the windiest spot on the lake and a kitesurfers’ paradise. The Ora comes strong and steady in the afternoon, with a perfect fetch for gliding. The pebble beach is dedicated to sailing sports and the atmosphere is international.
Malcesine – sailing and windsurfing
The area between Malcesine and Brenzone offers excellent conditions for sailing and windsurfing, with constant wind and picture-postcard scenery with the Scaliger Castle as a backdrop.
Gargnano – the sailing of tradition
Gargnano is the heart of Garda sailing: the Centomiglia, the world’s longest lake race, starts here. Sailing clubs in the area offer courses for all levels.
For beginners: how to get started
Garda is the perfect place to learn. Windsurfing and kite schools offer courses in Italian, English, and German, with equipment included. A basic windsurfing course lasts about 3 hours and costs between 50€ and 80€. For kitesurfing you need at least 6-8 hours of lessons spread over 2-3 days.
Mornings with light Pelér are ideal for first trips: steady wind, flat water and pleasant temperatures. Schools provide wetsuits (also needed in summer for extended sessions) and equipment suitable for beginners.
Equipment and Rentals
All schools and nautical centers offer equipment rental by the hour or by the day. Prices range from 20€/hour for a windsurf to 40-60€/hour for a full kite. If you bring your own equipment, several beach depots offer daily or seasonal storage.
When to go
The season runs from April to October, with the best time between May and September. In summer, winds are stronger and water temperatures more pleasant (22-25°C). Weekends are busier-if you can, choose midweek days for more space in the water.
Practical Tips
- Bring neoprene wetsuit even in summer – long sessions in lake water require protection
- Check the local wind forecast (WindGuru for Garda is very reliable)
- Respect the rules of precedence in the water and areas reserved for swimmers
- In high season book lessons and rentals in advance
