Arco: the capital of climbing
Arco is Europe’s sport climbing capital. The limestone cliffs of the Sarca Valley, year-round mild weather, and a perfect infrastructure for climbers have made this small town in Trentino the world’s benchmark for climbing. Every September the Rock Master Festival attracts the best climbers on the planet.
The crags
For beginners
- Massone: the crag-school par excellence, with routes from 4a to 6b on perfect rock. 5 minutes from the center of Arco
- Nago: vertical and leaning walls with grades from 4c to 6c. View of the lake
- St. Paul: technical plaque with moderate difficulty, ideal for improving technique
For experts

Via ferrata routes
The Arco area offers some of the most beautiful via ferratas in the Alps:

- Via Ferrata Che Guevara – challenging, in Pietramurata
- Via Ferrata Cima Capi – the most scenic, above the lake
Guides and schools
Arco is full of mountain guides and climbing schools offering:
- Basic courses: from zero to climber in one weekend (150-200€)
- Advanced courses: technique on lead, multi-pitch climbing
- Guided via ferrata routes: with equipment included (60-100€)
- Climbing camp: intensive weeks for all levels
Specialty stores offer full equipment rental: shoes, harness, helmet, rope.
The Rock Master
The Rock Master Festival, held every September since 1987, is the oldest and most prestigious climbing event in the world. The best climbers on the planet compete on an artificial wall in the center of Arco in front of thousands of spectators. The atmosphere is electrifying and admission is free.
Beyond climbing
Arco is not only climbing: the Castle on the rocky cliff dominates the town with its unmistakable profile. The historic center with its Renaissance palaces, the Archducal Garden, and the palm tree-lined waterfront offer moments of relaxation after wall sessions. The food scene is lively with restaurants, craft breweries, and pizzerias satisfying the post-climbing appetite.
When to go
Arco is a 365-day-a-year climbing destination. Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer ideal temperatures for climbing. Summer is hot but the shady crags remain viable. Winter is surprisingly mild thanks to the Garda microclimate-many European climbers come here for the winter season.
