Porto Vecchio e Dogana Veneta
Torbole sul Garda
Historic harbour where Goethe described the lake as a miracle.
Torbole’s Porto Vecchio is one of Lake Garda’s most historic and enchanting spots, the beating heart of Nago-Torbole where the authentic spirit of the lake reveals itself around every corner.
History and architecture
In 1786 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe arrived at Lake Garda for the first time and immortalised it in his “Italian Journey” as a true miracle of nature. The imposing Venetian Customs House overlooking the harbour recalls the days when Torbole was the border between Venetian and Austro-Hungarian territories.
What to see
The narrow lanes of the old town reveal local character and centuries of European history, a living testament to everyday life on the lake.
Tips for visitors
Plan at least a couple of hours for the historic centre. The shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Stop at a traditional spot for an aperitivo or artisan gelato.
