Sentiero del Ponale
Torbole sul Garda
Ancient military road carved into the rock with breathtaking views.
The Ponale Trail is one of Trentino’s most celebrated hikes: about 5 km linking Riva del Garda to Lago di Ledro through tunnels in the rock, panoramic switchbacks and natural terraces suspended above the lake.
History and architecture
Built on a former Austro-Hungarian military road dating to 1851, the path is literally carved into the rock face, clinging to the sheer cliffs above the water: a rare blend of engineering heritage and Alpine grandeur.
What to see
Along the route you meet tunnels driven into the mountain and switchbacks that reveal breathtaking views of Lake Garda and the surrounding peaks at every turn, with endless photo opportunities.
Tips for visitors
Walk at sunrise or sunset for the best light; in winter clear skies offer exceptional visibility. Wear sturdy boots with good grip, bring plenty of water and allow two to three hours at a relaxed pace.
Nearby: Porto Vecchio & Venetian Customs House · Windsurf & kitesurf beaches · Monte Brione.
