Three days on Garda, just the two of you
There is something about Lake Garda that makes it naturally romantic: the light that changes every hour, the villages overlooking the water, and the sunsets that tint the mountains pink. But a romantic weekend on Garda shouldn’t be left to chance — the right spots need to be chosen carefully, away from mass tourism and tourist traps. This 3-day itinerary is designed for couples who want to experience the lake at a slow pace, enjoying great food, stunning views, and a few secret corners.
Day 1: Salò and Gardone Riviera — the charm of the riviera
Morning: Salò and its lakeside promenade
Start in Salò, the most elegant village on the Brescia side. The Salò promenade is the longest on Lake Garda: nearly a kilometer of walking among historic palaces, the Cathedral (featuring a polyptych by Paolo Veneziano), cafes with tables by the water, and the scent of the lake. Have breakfast at Bar Duomo in the square — cappuccino and pastry with a view.
Stroll to the small harbor and then head east along the shore to the little beach of San Bartolomeo. In spring, wisteria blooms on the walls of the Art Nouveau villas and the air is fragrant.
Lunch: lake fish
In Salò, eat lake fish. Grilled whitefish (lavarello), bigoli with freshwater sardines, or tench risotto: these are dishes you won’t find elsewhere. Look for a restaurant on the promenade with just a few tables and no tourist menu. Expect to pay around 30-40 euros per person for a full lunch with wine.
Afternoon: the Vittoriale degli Italiani
Just 3 km from Salò, Gardone Riviera is home to the Vittoriale degli Italiani — the monumental residence of Gabriele d’Annunzio. Whether you love or hate the man, the place is extraordinary: the Prioria (the house, filled with objects and obsessions), the ship Puglia embedded in the hillside, the gardens overlooking the gulf, and the amphitheater where concerts are held in summer. A full visit takes 2-3 hours. Full ticket 18 euros (complete route including the Prioria).
After the Vittoriale, head down to the Hruska Botanical Garden (now the André Heller Foundation): exotic plants, sculptures, and streams in a cozy, well-kept space. Entry 15 euros. Perfect for slowing down the pace.
Evening: dinner and a stroll
Return to Salò for dinner. Afterward, take a walk along the illuminated promenade. In summer, the reflection of the lights on the water creates an atmosphere that needs nothing else.
Day 2: Sirmione — spas, history, and sunset
Morning: the Castle and the Grottoes of Catullus
Head over to Sirmione, the most famous peninsula on Garda. Arrive early (before 9:30 AM) to avoid the crowds. Visit the Scaligero Castle — the view from the keep, after 146 steps, is a treat — then walk to the Grottoes of Catullus, the remains of a Roman villa at the tip of the peninsula. The walk among olive trees and ancient stones with the lake all around is one of the most beautiful moments of the trip.
On the way back, stop at Jamaica Beach for a dip in the warm, turquoise waters (free access).
Lunch: in the historic center
Eat in the historic center. Avoid the restaurants on the main street (too touristy) and look for trattorias in the side streets. A plate of bigoli and a glass of white Lugana, sitting in the shade of an alley: you don’t need anything more.
Afternoon: Aquaria Thermal SPA
The afternoon is dedicated to relaxation. Book your entry to the Aquaria Thermal SPA in Sirmione (online booking recommended, especially on weekends). The sulfurous water at 69°C feeds panoramic pools with lake views. Daytime entry starts at 56 euros per person. It includes pools, sauna, and a wellness circuit. Bring a bathrobe and swimsuit.
If your budget is tighter, look for the free thermal area near Jamaica Beach, where warm water naturally bubbles up between the rocks.
Evening: sunset from the peninsula
The sunset from Sirmione is among the most beautiful on Garda. Find a spot on the western promenade of the peninsula — towards Lido delle Bionde — and watch the sun dip behind Monte San Bartolomeo. Then have dinner at a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the lake. Perch with polenta and a vintage Lugana close the day the right way.
Day 3: the Verona side — Garda, Punta San Vigilio, and Bardolino
Morning: Punta San Vigilio
Move to the eastern shore. Punta San Vigilio, just north of Garda, is one of the most romantic corners of the entire lake. A promontory with centuries-old cypresses, a Renaissance villa (not open to visitors but visible from the outside), a small inn, and the Baia delle Sirene — a protected beach with an entry fee (about 8 euros). Get there early, when the place is almost deserted and the morning light filters through the trees.
Late morning: Rocca di Garda
From the center of Garda, a 30-minute walk leads to the Rocca and the Hermitage of the Camaldolese. The path climbs through holm oak woods to a natural terrace with one of the widest views over the lower lake. The hermitage is a place of silence. Perfect for a couple who wants a moment without tourists and noise.
Lunch and afternoon: Bardolino and wine
Head down to Bardolino for lunch on the promenade. Here, wine is at home: order a Chiaretto (the rosé of Garda, fresh and fragrant) with a lake fish dish. After lunch, move into the hills for a winery visit along the Bardolino Wine Route. Many wineries offer tastings by reservation (10-20 euros per person for 4-5 wines). Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil is produced in these same hills: you can taste that at some oil mills too.
Evening: one last sunset
For the final sunset, return to the promenade in Bardolino or Lazise with an ice cream in hand. The sun sets behind the Brescia mountains, the lake turns orange, and the light changes every minute. A simple ending, like all the best things.
