Family-Friendly Lake Garda

Lake Garda is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Italy. The mild climate, short distances, variety of activities, and safe beaches make it perfect for vacations with children of all ages. From the sandy beaches of the south to the adventure parks of the north, here are 20 family activities tested and approved, with practical information on recommended ages, costs, and how to get there.

Beaches and Swimming: Where to Take Kids in the Water

1. Sabbioni Beach, Riva del Garda

The largest beach in the northern part of the lake, with gradual entry into the water and a large lawn for spreading out towels. There’s a playground nearby and a bar for lunch. Free access. Ideal for children from 0 years and up. Reachable on foot from the center of Riva del Garda.

2. Brema Beach, Brenzone

Small pebble beach with crystal-clear water, sheltered and quiet. The water is so clear you can see the bottom even at several meters depth. Perfect for snorkeling with children from 6 years old. Parking nearby. Close to Brenzone sul Garda.

3. Lido di Lazise Pool

If the lake is too cold (which happens at the start of the season), Lazise has a lido with heated pools, slides for children, and a lawn area. Admission about 8 euros for adults, 5 euros for children. Bar and restaurant on-site. Open from May to September.

4. Baia delle Sirene, Punta San Vigilio

A sheltered bay near Garda, with a lawn shaded by centuries-old olive trees and calm water. Admission is charged (about 8 euros for adults, 4 euros for children). The advantage: it’s peaceful, well-maintained, and not overcrowded. Suitable for families who want a relaxed day without stress.

Amusement Parks: Thrills for Everyone

5. Gardaland

Italy’s most famous amusement park is located in Castelnuovo del Garda. For younger children there’s Fantasy Kingdom and Peppa Pig Land. For older kids: Oblivion, Raptor, and water roller coasters. Full ticket about 49 euros, reduced for children (under 1 meter free). It’s worth buying online in advance: you save money and avoid lines. Plan for a full day.

6. Caneva Aquapark

Water park next to Gardaland, with slides, wave pool, and areas dedicated to young children. In summer it’s a perfect alternative to the lake when it’s very hot. Ticket about 30 euros. Open from June to September. Bring high-protection sunscreen and a hat.

7. Movieland

Movie-themed park, also in the Lazise area. Live shows, themed attractions, and simulators. Less chaotic than Gardaland and with shorter lines. Ticket about 35 euros. Children from 4 to 10 years old have the most fun here.

8. Jungle Adventure Park, San Zeno di Montagna

Adventure park with acrobatic tree courses at different heights and difficulty levels. The baby courses (from 3 years) are low and safe, while those for teens and adults reach 15 meters above ground. Price about 20-25 euros. It’s located above the lake, in the hills, with cooler temperatures on hot days.

Nature and Animals: Exploring the Area

9. Parco Natura Viva, Bussolengo

Safari zoo and wildlife park 15 minutes from the lake. You can drive through the safari section (giraffes, lions, rhinos) and then visit the wildlife section on foot with a reptile house and tropical greenhouse. Kids love the life-size dinosaur trail. Full ticket about 25 euros, reduced for children about 19 euros. Plan for 4-5 hours.

10. Malcesine – Monte Baldo Cable Car

The rotating cable car from Malcesine climbs to 1,760 m in 10 minutes. For children it’s an adventure: the cabin rotates during the ascent. At the top, green meadows to run in, marmots to spot, and a refreshment bar. You can walk on easy mountain trails. In winter there’s snow. Round-trip ticket about 25 euros for adults, 15 euros for children.

11. Hruska Botanical Garden, Gardone Riviera

Now the André Heller Foundation, this garden in Gardone Riviera combines exotic plants, contemporary art sculptures, and streams. Children enjoy the giant statues, bamboo, and fish in the pond. Visit takes about 1 hour. Admission 15 euros for adults, 5 euros for children.

12. Molina Waterfalls

The Molina Waterfalls are a natural park in the Verona hinterland with three marked trails through canyons, waterfalls, and wooden bridges. Children experience it as a jungle adventure. Easiest trail: 45 minutes. Admission about 8 euros. Note: the paths can be slippery, closed shoes with good grip are required.

Culture and Museums: Learning While Having Fun

13. Grotte di Catullo, Sirmione

The ruins of the Roman villa in Sirmione impress even children: enormous walls, passages to explore, lizards everywhere, and the lake view from the top. The museum has Roman artifacts that curious kids will appreciate. Admission 8 euros, free for under 18. Also reachable by tourist train from the center (5 euros round-trip), which children really enjoy.

14. Paper Museum, Toscolano-Maderno

The Valle delle Cartiere in Toscolano-Maderno tells the story of paper production, which for centuries was the main industry in this area. The museum organizes workshops for children where they make paper by hand. An educational and fun experience. Admission about 7 euros, workshops by reservation.

15. Malcesine Castle and Goethe Museum

The Scaliger Castle in Malcesine is reached on foot via stone stairs, with rooms that tell the history of the lake. For children it’s a “real” castle, with battlements, a tower, and panoramic views from the top. The story of Goethe being arrested here is an anecdote that captures their attention. Admission about 7 euros, reduced for children. Spectacular view from the top.

Sports and Adventure: Activities for Active Families

16. Cycling on the Limone-Riva Bike Path

The Limone-Riva bike path is a suspended path over the lake, built on rock with breathtaking views. About 4 km long (completed section), it’s flat and safe. You can rent bikes with child seats or cargo bikes for younger children in Limone or Riva. Route suitable from 4 years and up (on own bike) or from 0 years (child seat/cargo).

17. SUP and Kayak in Torbole

Several centers in Torbole offer SUP (stand up paddle) lessons for families. The morning wind is light and the water calm: ideal conditions for children from 7-8 years old. 1-hour lesson about 35-40 euros. Some centers also offer double kayaks where a parent and child can paddle together.

18. Family Canyoning

In the Arco area and Val di Ledro there are canyoning routes suitable for families with children from 10 years old. Professional guides provide all equipment (wetsuit, helmet, harness). You descend small canyons with natural slides, controlled jumps, and rope descents. An adventure kids will remember for a long time. About 60-70 euros per person.

19. Busatte-Tempesta Trail

The Busatte-Tempesta trail is a path with metal staircases clinging to the cliff above the lake. Children from 8 years old love it: it’s adventurous, safe (railings everywhere), and the view is spectacular. Duration about 2 hours. Bring snacks and water. Return by bus (line 333).

20. Boat Trip

It may seem simple, but a boat trip is an activity that always excites children. Navigarda connects all the towns on the lake. A day ticket allows you to get on and off as you please. From Desenzano to Riva the journey takes about 4 hours with all stops: a relaxed way to see the whole lake without driving. Children under 4 free, 4-12 years reduced rate.

Practical Tips for Families on Lake Garda

  • Best time: June and September. July and August are hot and crowded.
  • Accommodation: the southern part of the lake (Lazise, Bardolino, Peschiera) has more family-friendly facilities. The north (Riva, Arco) is better for active families.
  • Transportation: a car is almost essential for getting around with young children. Rent a car seat if you’re flying in.
  • Supermarkets: they’re everywhere. The Eurospin and Conad in Lazise and Peschiera are the best-stocked in the southern area.
  • Pharmacies: available in every village. For pediatric emergencies, the hospital in Peschiera del Garda is the most accessible from the southern area; the one in Arco for the northern area.
