Malcesine: the jewel of the Veronese shore.
Malcesine is the most photographed village on Lake Garda: the Scaliger Castle plunging into the water, the small port with its colorful boats, and Mount Baldo rising like a scenic backdrop behind it. A place that bewitched Goethe on his Grand Tour and continues to enchant every visitor.
The Scaliger Castle
Malcesine Castle is a 13th-century fortress built on the rock overlooking the lake. Inside it houses the Museum of Natural History of Mount Baldo and Local Traditions, with a section devoted to Goethe-the German poet was arrested here in 1786 because locals mistook him for an Austrian spy while he was drawing the castle. From the summit tower, the view of the lake and Baldo is one of the most beautiful on Lake Garda.
The Old Town
Malcesine’s alleys are a fascinating maze of stone houses, artisan stores, and restaurants with terraces overlooking the lake. Via Capitanato, the main street, climbs from the port to the castle via stairways and porticoes. The Porto Vecchio is the heart of the village: fishing boats, open-air cafes, and the Palazzo dei Capitani-the seat of the Venetian governor-create a miniature Venetian atmosphere.
The cable car to Mount Baldo
The Malcesine cable car is an attraction in itself: in 10 minutes it takes you from the lakeshore (90 m) to the summit of Monte Baldo (1760 m), with rotating cabins offering 360-degree views as you ascend. From the top the view is extraordinary: Garda 1700 meters below, the Dolomites, Adamello, and on clear days the Po Valley all the way to the Apennines.
In summer the summit is a starting point for hikes on the Baldo Ridge and for bikers on Trail 601. In winter it offers ski and snowshoe trails. Paragliders take off from the summit to land on Malcesine beach-a daily sight.
Beaches
Malcesine offers several beaches: Val di Sogno, a sheltered bay between olive groves and the castle, is the most romantic. Spiaggia del Porto is the most convenient. The coves below the castle are the most picturesque. The waters are deep and clear, perfect for swimming.
