The lakeside promenade of Salò is the most elegant promenade on Lake Garda: 2.8 km of promenade overlooking the most beautiful gulf on the lake, with the profile of Monte San Bartolomeo as a backdrop and a Riviera atmosphere reminiscent of the French Riviera. A short but unforgettable walk.
The route
Start from Piazza della Vittoria and walk along the lakefront towards the east, passing the marina and public gardens. The gulf of Salò opens up in all its beauty: the mountains surround the stretch of water, creating a natural amphitheatre that protects from the winds and provides a mild microclimate all year round.
The Cathedral of Salò, dedicated to Sant’Annunciata, dominates the small square with its Renaissance façade. Inside it houses works by Romanino and Moretto, masters of the Brescian Renaissance.
History
Salò was the ‘capital’ of the Italian Social Republic (1943-45) and preserves traces of that dramatic period in the MuSa – Museo di Salò, which is well worth a visit. But Salò is above all elegance: historic shops, period cafés, gourmet restaurants and a refined atmosphere that sets it apart from other towns on the lake.
Practical advice
Level walk accessible to all. The Saturday morning market on the lakeside is an institution. Salò’s restaurants are among the best on Lake Garda – make reservations for dinner, especially in summer. Navigarda boats connect Salò to all the towns on the Brescia shore. Parking along the lakefront or in the car parks upstream from the centre.
