Between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, Gardone Riviera experienced a season of international splendor: aristocrats, intellectuals and well-to-do people from all over Europe chose this corner of the lake to vacation, bringing with them refined tastes and substantial capital. The result is an architectural heritage that can still be read today along the lakefront, which this walk takes you through with a discerning eye.
The starting point is Piazza Wimmer, the civic heart of lakeside Gardone, from which departs the Paul Heyse Promenade – named after the German Nobel laureate who loved this place – lined with manicured gardens and period villas. Along the way are buildings that tell of the aesthetics of the era: the Grand Hotel Gardone (1883), with its imposing bulk still dominating the lakefront; the Savoy Palace (1906), elegant in its Art Nouveau sobriety; and Villa Alba (1901-1910), an example of a luxury private residence later transformed into a public facility.
Particularly striking are the buildings that mix function and symbol: the St. Mark’s Tower (1900), the Municipal Casino (1897), and the Evangelical Church of the same year-evidence of the presence of a stable northern European Protestant community in Gardone. Each facade tells of the habits, fashions, and aspirations of a Europe that did not yet suspect the catastrophes of the 20th century.
The walk ends near the Grand Hotel Fasano, one of the best-preserved historic hotels on the Brescian shore, still in operation today. It is also a perfect itinerary in the evening hours, when the lights of the lakefront enhance the period architecture.
