The Garda Trek Medium Loop is a 4-stage, 73 km-long trek that follows the intermediate loop of the Garda Trek system, passing through spectacular scenery in the mountains surrounding the upper lake. A perfect multi-day adventure for those who want to experience Garda away from the crowds, sleeping in mountain huts and villages.
The 4 stages
The trek starts from Riva del Garda and runs through the mountains on the western and eastern shores of the upper lake, touching on panoramic points offering aerial views of Garda and the surrounding valleys. Each stage offers a different landscape: from beech forests to alpine meadows, from panoramic ridges to historic villages.
The total difference in altitude of 3275 metres is spread over 4 days, with an average of around 800 metres per day – challenging but within the reach of trained hikers. The trails are well signposted and follow the trail network of the Trentino and Verona provinces.
Where to sleep
The stages are calibrated to reach refuges, agritourisms and small mountain hotels where you can regenerate yourself with Trentino and Garda cuisine. Dumplings, polenta, salami and malga cheese accompany evenings in the company of other trekkers. Advance booking is recommended, especially in high season (July-August).
Practical advice
Medium difficulty: requires training and familiarity with walking in the mountains, but no technical or exposed passages. Complete trekking equipment: boots with Vibram soles, 35-40 litre rucksack, layered clothing and rain jacket. The ideal period is from June to September. Luggage transport available between stages on request. The route can also be covered in a shortened version by skipping individual stages thanks to the connections to the villages by the lake.
