The hike to Monte Tremalzo and Corno della Marogna is a challenging trek that takes you into the heart of the mountains above Limone sul Garda, in a wild and unfrequented alpine environment. 14 km with 1000 metres of altitude difference through forests, high-altitude meadows and panoramas ranging from Lake Garda to the Brenta Dolomites.
The route
The route starts from the road that climbs towards the Nota Pass above Limone, crossing beech and fir woods that gradually thin out, leaving room for alpine meadows. Monte Tremalzo (1975 m) is the first destination: from the summit the panorama is extraordinary, with Lake Garda stretching 1500 metres below and the mountains of Valle di Ledro to the north.
From here we continue along the ridge towards the Corno della Marogna, crossing a rugged and solitary landscape where it is easy to encounter chamois and marmots. The path partly follows the old military mule tracks of the First World War, which cross these mountains with a network of trenches and fortifications.
Environment and nature
The Tremalzo area is famous among botanists for its exceptionally rich alpine flora: in spring the meadows are coloured with rhododendrons, gentians and edelweiss. The fauna includes chamois, golden eagles and, with a bit of luck, the capercaillie. This is an excursion for those who love authentic mountains, far from the crowds of the better-known destinations.
Practical tips
Long and demanding hike, reserved for experienced hikers. Hard-soled hiking boots, layered clothing and rain jacket mandatory – the weather at altitude changes rapidly. Bring water and food – there are no huts along the route. Early morning departure recommended. Period: June-October. Car park at the Nota Pass accessible by car from Limone.
