The Sentiero del Sole (Sun Trail) is a 9 km hiking route that crosses the mountains above Limone sul Garda, following an ancient route that connected the villages of the upper lake. A hike of medium difficulty among olive groves, lemon groves and villages suspended between lake and mountain, with views that fully justify the name.
The route
It starts in Limone sul Garda and ascends through the characteristic lemon houses – the greenhouses where lemons and citrus fruits have been cultivated since the 18th century thanks to the exceptional microclimate of Lake Garda. The path follows ancient mule tracks that connected Limone to the inland villages, with original stone paving stones that bear witness to centuries of walking.
The route gradually climbs between terraced olive groves and Mediterranean woods, offering continuous views of the lake below. The viewpoints along the path are numerous and each one offers a different perspective on the upper Garda, with the mountains plunging into the water creating the unique Alpine-Mediterranean scenery of this area.
Culture and history
Along the path you will come across evidence of rural life in the past: dry stone walls, votive shrines, old stone barns. The lemon houses of Limone, with their stone columns and protective glass, are a unique architectural heritage, born of the ingenuity of farmers who braved the Alpine climate to cultivate citrus fruits.
Practical advice
Medium difficulty with a 500 metre difference in height distributed gradually. Hiking shoes recommended. The path is exposed to the sun – in summer, bring a hat, sun cream and plenty of water. The best time is spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild. After the hike, the centre of Limone offers restaurants with views and the possibility of continuing on the suspended cycle path to Riva.
