Among lemon groves, olive groves and ancient churches

Limone sul Garda is perhaps the most photographed village on the Brescia side of Lake Garda, but few people know it beyond the lakefront. This circular route reveals it at its most authentic, climbing from the shores to the churches and lemon houses that for centuries have defined the village’s agricultural and cultural identity.

Set off from Lungolago Marconi and walk up toward the historic center, traversing cobbled lanes between dark stone houses and sudden glimpses of the lake. The first must-see stop is the Limonaia del Castèl, an 18th-century terraced garden with characteristic masonry columns that supported the winter roofing: an ingenious system that allowed citrus trees to be grown in the middle of the alpine area.

Continuing on we reach the 17th-century Church of St. Benedict and the Museum of Tourism, which tells how Limone became an international destination in the 19th century. Just beyond stands the birthplace of St. Daniele Comboni, the Brescian bishop and founder of the Comboni Missionaries, canonized in 2003.

The path then ascends to the Church of San Pietro in Oliveto, a medieval building set in a centuries-old olive grove from which there is one of the most beautiful views of the entire lake. The descent leads back to the lakefront, touching on Villa Boghi, the municipal headquarters, and the Fishermen’s Museum.

Easy and enjoyable in any season, the route is perfect as an introduction to Limone sul Garda for those staying in the area or arriving by ferry. Recommended on clear days to maximize lake views.
