Canyoning in the Rio Nero is a water adventure in the heart of Garda Trentino that combines diving, abseiling, natural slides and swimming in crystal-clear pools. An adrenaline experience of about 3 hours in a gorge carved by water into the limestone, just a few minutes from Torbole.
The experience
The Rio Nero is a torrent that has carved a deep, narrow gorge through the mountains above Torbole over thousands of years. The canyoning route follows the stream through small waterfalls, emerald pools and narrow passages between smooth rock walls. Walking sections in the stream alternate with rappelling down small waterfalls, plunges into deep pools and natural slides where the water has moulded the rock into perfect slides.
The ambience is spectacular: light filters in from above creating shadows on the rock, lush vegetation frames the gorge and the sound of the water accompanies every step.
For whom it is suitable
Despite the difficult classification, canyoning is accessible to anyone who is reasonably fit and can swim. Professional guides provide all the necessary equipment – neoprene wetsuit, helmet, harness and shoes – and instruct participants in basic techniques before entering the gorge. The minimum height of the dives is about 2 metres, with options up to 8 metres for the more courageous.
Practical tips
Activity available from May to September, when the water level is ideal. Booking with an authorised operator is compulsory – it is not possible to enter the gorge on your own. Bring swimming costume and towel, the rest is provided. Duration approx. 3 hours, 2 of which in the gorge. Various guides and outdoor centres in Arco and Torbole offer day trips with transport included.
