This circular route winds through the heart of Gargnano, a village that has preserved centuries of tradition in the cultivation of Mediterranean citrus fruits. It starts at the La Malora lemon house, active since the 16th century, and climbs through narrow alleys and stone stairways lined with high walls that protected the lemons from the rigors of winter.
The structures of the lemon houses-stone pillars and wooden beams-were covered during the cold months to ensure the production of millions of fruits destined for northern European markets. The trail also touches on the Fondo Crocefisso, an agricultural restoration project that integrates citrus, olive trees and vines into a sustainable ecosystem that reintroduces ancient Gardesan rural practices.
Highlights include the Church and Cloister of St. Francis, where Franciscan friars introduced the cultivation of lemons, and the small Chapel of the Holy Crucifix nestled among citrus groves. The walk also offers splendid views of the lake, passing through charming alleys of the historic village.
Rounding out the picture is the 11th-century Chapel of St. James, a traditional landing place for Garda fishermen. An experience that weaves natural landscape, history and cultural identity into an itinerary suitable for all.
