The GranGarda is the ultimate biking adventure on Lake Garda: a 350 km bikepacking route with 10,000 metres of elevation gain that circumnavigates the entire lake via scenic roads, mountain passes and historic villages. An epic 3-5 day experience for trained cyclists and adventure lovers.
The route
The GranGarda circumnavigates Lake Garda in its entirety, but it doesn’t just follow the Gardesana: the route moves away from the lake and up the surrounding mountain passes, offering aerial views and cycling challenges worthy of the pros. The route crosses Passo Tremalzo, Val di Ledro, the Tremosine plateau, the moraine hills and Monte Baldo.
The bikepacking format provides total autonomy: backpacks or bike bags with the necessary sleeping gear and an adventurous approach to the trip. Nights in tents, bivouacs in refuges and B&B stops along the way are alternated.
Key sections
The ascent to Tremalzo from Val di Ledro is the most demanding stage with over 1500 metres of altitude difference. The Strada della Forra is the most scenic section. The cycle paths of the lower lake offer flat recovery sections. The climb to Monte Baldo from the Verona side is the last great challenge before the finish.
Practical tips
Only for well-trained cyclists with bikepacking experience. Gravel or road bike with wide tyres recommended. Complete equipment: sleeping kit, clothing for all weather conditions, repair tools. Plan stages in advance and book at least a few nights in accommodation. The ideal period is May-June and September-October, avoiding the summer heat. GPS with downloadable track recommended.
