Mount Baldo: the Garden of Europe

Mount Baldo is the mountain that dominates the eastern shore of Lake Garda, extending 40 km from Caprino Veronese to Avio. With its highest peak at 2218 m (Cima Valdritta), it offers trails for all levels and views ranging from Garda to the Dolomites. Nicknamed “Hortus Europae” for its extraordinary botanical biodiversity, Baldo is a must-see destination for trekking enthusiasts.

Easy trails

Prada Alta – Mondini Refuge

The walk from Prada to Rifugio Mondini is the most accessible scenic hike on Baldo: 8 km among flower-filled meadows with constant views of the lake. Suitable for families, with lunch at the refuge and malga cuisine. The 400 m elevation gain is gradual and pleasant.

Health Trail – Malcesine

The Health Trail meanders through the olive groves of Malcesine: 8 km easy with views of Scaliger Castle and the lake. Perfect for half a day.

Intermediate paths

Monte Baldo – Ridge

The Cresta del Baldo traverse is the classic trek: cable car from Malcesine to the summit, then descent along the scenic ridge with aerial views on both sides. 8.5 km, 480 m elevation gain and unforgettable views of the lake 1500 m below.

Naole Ridge

The Cresta di Naole is a 12 km loop on the ridge of Verona’s Baldo with alternating views of Garda and Adige Valley. 650 m of elevation gain and stops at refuges with mountain cuisine.

Fort Naole – Trail 662

Trail 662 combines nature and history: 10 km through alpine meadows and the ruins of an Austro-Hungarian World War I fort. 600 m of elevation gain and views of the Adige Valley.

Challenging trails

Cima Valdritta from Novezzina

The ascent to Cima Valdritta (2218 m) is the most challenging hike on Baldo: 13 km, 965 m of elevation gain and the view from the highest peak in the range. From Garda to the Dolomites, from the Po Valley to the Apennines – on a clear day the view is boundless.

Altissimo Refuge

The trek to Rifugio Altissimo is a full-day walk: 14 km, 1100 m elevation gain through environments that change with altitude. The refuge offers mountain cuisine and the possibility of an overnight stay to enjoy the sunrise from the summit.

The Monte Baldo cable car

Malcesine’s cable car takes you from the lakeshore (90 m) to the summit of Baldo (1760 m) in just 10 minutes, with rotating cabins offering 360-degree views during the ascent. It is the most convenient way to reach the ridge and from there undertake high-altitude hiking without the fatigue of the climb.

Flora and fauna

Mount Baldo is home to more than 1,500 plant species, many of them endemic. From the Mediterranean forests of the base to the summit pastures, each elevation band has its own vegetation: orchids, gentians, rhododendrons and edelweiss follow one another as in a natural botanical garden. Wildlife includes chamois, marmots, golden eagles and grouse.

Practical Tips

  • Equipment: hiking boots for high trails, light shoes for low trails
  • Period: May to October; high altitude trails are often snow-covered until June
  • Weather: check local forecasts – weather in the mountains changes rapidly
  • Water: bring enough – water fountains are rare on the trails
  • Cable car: book online in peak season to avoid queues
