When the lake changes color

Lake Garda in autumn is a different place from the summer version. The tourists leave, the light turns golden, the hills are tinged with red and orange, and the air smells of must and new oil. It’s the season when Garda shows its most authentic side — that of the farmers harvesting grapes, the mills grinding olives, and the thermal baths steaming in the morning mist. If you’re thinking about what to do on Lake Garda in autumn, this guide is for you.

The grape harvest: September and October among the vineyards

Autumn on Lake Garda begins with the grape harvest. The hills behind Bardolino, Valtenesi, and the Lugana area (from Sirmione to Peschiera) come alive with tractors, grape baskets, and the sweet scent of fermenting must.

Many wineries open their doors during the harvest and organize special tours: you can watch the pressing, taste the freshly squeezed must, and buy the previous year’s wine at cellar prices. The Bardolino Wine Route is the ideal path for a tour through the vineyards during this period.

The highlight is the Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival, held in early October: stalls with local products, free tastings, music, and a festive atmosphere that involves the whole town.

New oil: November in the oil mills

From mid-October, the olive harvest gets into full swing. The oil mills of Lake Garda — concentrated mainly on the Brescia side, between Gargnano, Toscolano-Maderno, and Salò — work around the clock until December. New oil (novello) has an intense, spicy, and bitter flavor, completely different from the oil you buy at the supermarket.

Visiting an oil mill during the pressing is a sensory experience: the sound of the machines, the smell of freshly crushed olives, the bright green color of the oil coming out of the centrifuge. Many producers organize guided tastings with bruschetta and freshly pressed oil. The price per liter at the mill ranges from €15 to €30 — not cheap, but the quality is something else.

Foliage: where to see the autumn colors

Lake Garda isn’t New England, but its autumn colors have a special charm because they blend with the blue of the lake and the green of the evergreen olive trees. The best spots to admire the foliage on Lake Garda:

  • Monte Baldo: the beech trees in the 800 to 1,400 m range turn gold and copper between mid-October and early November. The cable car from Malcesine allows you to reach the summit effortlessly. The Monte Baldo ridge in autumn is deserted and spectacular.
  • Valle delle Cartiere, Toscolano-Maderno: a narrow, wooded valley where autumn colors are reflected in the stream. An easy 1-hour walk to the Paper Museum.
  • Sigurtà Park, Valeggio sul Mincio: one of Italy’s most beautiful parks, with avenues of hornbeams, maples, and oaks that create tunnels of color in autumn. Entry is about €16.
  • Ponale Path, Riva del Garda: the Ponale in autumn offers a low light that turns the rock faces golden. Less crowded than in summer.
  • Bardolino Hills: the bare vineyards between November and December create a graphic, almost Japanese landscape, with orderly rows and soft colors.

Thermal baths: the pleasure of warmth when it’s cool outside

Autumn is the best time for thermal baths. When the air gets cool and the mist rises from the lake, soaking in warm outdoor water is a completely different experience from summer.

  • Sirmione Thermal Baths (Aquaria): thermal pools at 36°C with a view of the lake shrouded in autumn mist. Entry from €40 (evening) to €56 (daytime). Less crowded than in summer, with a more intimate atmosphere.
  • Villa dei Cedri, Colà di Lazise: a thermal park with a warm water lake surrounded by centuries-old trees. In autumn, the park’s colors are reflected in the steaming water. Entry is about €30 (daily).
  • Gardone Riviera Thermal Baths: a wellness center with a thermal pool and spa circuits. More intimate than the larger thermal centers.

Autumn trekking: the best trails

Autumn is the ideal season for walking on Lake Garda: mild temperatures (15-20°C at low altitudes), clear air, empty trails. The best routes this season:

  • Rocca di Manerba: a short walk with autumn views over the lower lake and Isola del Garda. Migratory birds of prey pass through in October.
  • Monte Luppia: a trail in the Veronese hinterland with prehistoric petroglyphs and woods that change color.
  • Hermitage of San Giorgio: above Gargnano, the hermitage in autumn is wrapped in silence and the warm light of the late afternoon.
  • Busatte-Tempesta: the metal staircases above the lake are empty in autumn. The view is even clearer on days with the Tramontana wind.
  • Punta Larici: the natural balcony above Riva del Garda, with views of the lake and mountains. In autumn, the colors of the valley below are extraordinary.

Autumn events on Lake Garda

  • September: Mantua Literature Festival (45 min from Lake Garda, reachable by bike via the Mincio Cycle Path). Hundreds of meetings with international authors.
  • October: Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival — tastings, music, stalls. Pumpkin Festival in Zuclo (Sarca Valley). Chestnut festivals in the inland villages.
  • November: San Martino Fair in Lazise (November 11) — the oldest fair on Lake Garda, with stalls, roasted chestnuts, and mulled wine. Opening of the oil mills for new oil all along the Brescia side.
  • Late November: Christmas Markets start to appear — Arco, Riva del Garda, Lazise, and Salò organize the most charming ones. A taste of the Christmas atmosphere.

Can you still swim in the lake?

September is still a good month for swimming, especially in the south of the lake where the water stays at 22-24°C until mid-month. In October, the water drops to 18-20°C — still doable for the brave. From November onwards, swimming is for true enthusiasts (or those with thermal baths available).

Practical tips for Lake Garda in autumn

  • Accommodation: prices drop by 30-50% compared to summer. Many hotels offer autumn wellness packages with thermal baths and tastings.
  • Weather: bring a waterproof jacket and a light fleece. Days can be warm in the sun but cool in the shade. Morning mist is frequent in November, but it usually clears by 11 AM.
  • Ferries: Navigarda reduces its services from mid-October. Check the schedules on the website before planning ferry trips.
  • Restaurants: many stay open all year round. In autumn, the menus change: pumpkin, mushrooms, chestnuts, and game join the lake fish.
  • Cycle paths: conditions are ideal for cycling. Mild temperatures, little wind, no crowds. The Morenic Hills with their golden vineyards are a postcard-perfect route.

Autumn on Lake Garda is a revelation for those who only know it in summer. It’s a season of flavors, colors, and silences that transform the lake into a different place — more intimate, more authentic, slower. If you have the chance to choose when to come, choose October. You won’t regret it.
